They say the best attitude in life is gratitude. And today, at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital – DOK, we’re living it.
If you’ve ever visited Kasese during the dry season, then you know—it gets hot.
Like, really hot. The kind of heat that wraps around you and doesn’t let go.
Now imagine that heat sealed inside a hospital operating room.
No breeze. No open windows. No way for it to escape.
That’s been our daily reality.
Why Operating Rooms Get So Hot.
At Mt. St. Mary’s, we have four operating rooms:
- One for maternity (dedicated to C-sections and deliveries)
- Three in our general surgery wing
All of them are sealed tight—for a good reason.
To keep infections out, there’s no airflow from outside.
But that also means no cooling breeze inside.
Now picture a surgeon:
Dressed in thick gowns, a face mask, gloves (two pairs!), boots…
Standing under bright surgical lights…
Focused on performing a delicate procedure…
It’s like working inside an oven.
And for almost three years, our surgical teams did just that—every single day.
A Game-Changer: Hospital Operating Room Air Conditioning
Recently, that all changed.
Thanks to a generous donation from our friends and supporters, we received five brand-new AC units for our operating theatres.
Let that sink in.
What felt impossible for years… shifted with a single act of kindness.
Now, our surgical teams walk into a theatre that feels cool, calm, and ready for healing.
Where the AC Units Are Now Helping
- Maternity Theatre → 2 AC units
- Orthopedic Room (Theatre 1) → 2 AC units
- Theatre Room 2 → 1 AC unit
- Room 3 → Still pending (but we’ll get there)
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Some might ask—“What’s the big deal with cool air?”
Here’s the truth:
- It improves surgeon focus
- Reduces fatigue for staff
- Keeps patients comfortable
