Imagine carrying a secret pain for years. A pain so personal, so humiliating, that you suffer in silence. Every laugh, every cough, every step is a reminder of what’s broken inside you.
For many women, this isn’t just a bad day. It’s their reality—every single day. They live with constant discomfort, shame, and isolation. Some are abandoned by their families. Others stop working, stop socializing, stop living. All because of a treatable condition.
These are mothers who experienced traumatic childbirth injuries. Left incontinent, unable to control urine or stool.. making everyday life unbearable.
The Hidden Problem
In many villages, childbirth injuries are a silent epidemic. Women give birth without proper medical care. Complications happen. And when they do, there’s often no one to help.
These injuries don’t just cause pain. They steal dignity. Women with these conditions can’t work, can’t travel, and often can’t even sit in public without fear of embarrassment. Many of them withdraw from their communities, hiding in shame.
The Solution – A Camp of Hope
With the help of kind-hearted donors – The Association of Religious in Uganda (ARU) with funding from the Hilton Foundation … Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital-DOK organized a special surgical camp.
Our goal was simple: give these women their lives back.
We spread the word through radio, churches, and community outreaches.
Women came from Masindi, Hoima, Kagadi, Kakumiro, Kabarole, Kyenjonjo, Kyankwazi, Kasese, Kamwenge, Mityana, Buhwenzu and Kanungu. Some traveling for days, hoping for a chance at healing.
We screened over 176 women. Many had suffered for years, unable to afford surgery. But thanks to the incredible team of surgeons, nurses, anesthetists, theatre staffs and volunteers, 40 women received life-changing surgeries. The remaining 136… some were just counselled, others given drugs and others referred to other facilities.
One mother, who had lived with her injury for over a decade, broke down in tears after her surgery. “I can finally go to the market without fear,” she whispered. Her relief was overwhelming.
The Reality – And What Needs to Change
The camp was a success, but it wasn’t enough.
Many women were left untreated because we didn’t have enough resources.
Some still leak urine to this day, waiting for another opportunity. The need is overwhelming, and the funds are limited.
More camps are needed. More training for doctors. More equipment. More awareness.
How You Can Help
These women don’t just need medical care—they need hope. They need to know they are not forgotten. And that’s where you come in.
Your support can fund future camps, buy the necessary equipment, and train more doctors to provide these life-changing surgeries. A small donation can mean the difference between a life of isolation and a life of dignity.
Together, we can restore hope.
